2014

Last night I went to sleep optimistic,
My heart was hopeful and I really believed.
I awoke this morning to the realisation
That we had failed and that no matter
How we looked things we had failed.
Last night I saw a future, stretching out
Towards a brighter life, an equal life,
An independent life that we could claim.
I awoke this morning to the realisation
That my own peers, my own people, had
Chosen, of their own free will, to enforce
A continued servitude.
And I despaired.

The prompt today was a poem for a specific occasion.
